We often think of materialism as “consumerism”, producing and wanting ever more and more stuff. Yes, that is one of the results of materialistic thinking, but it goes much deeper than that. Materialism, belief that this world is all there is, and that things are as we perceive them, is much more insidious. It is in each one of us, in the air we breathe and the water we drink, in our educational systems and even in our churches. How do we find our way through materialism to the spirit? Can we get there from here?
