SUMMARY:Faust - Beat the Devil
DESCRIPTION:An exhilarating romp through Goethe’s theatrical masterpiece about heaven\, hell and a battle for the soul of a man searching for truth\, satisfaction . . . and a Goddess.  \n\n\n\nAstonishingly pertinent to our time and our struggles to be truly human. A man who has studied everything\, feels he knows nothing and takes up magic to find something to satisfy his craving for beauty\, knowledge and meaning. But his bargain with the devil has surprising twists. \nBased on Goethe’s play (Parts I and II)\n(Ninety minutes including an intermission. Yes\, the whole story!) \nBeat the Devil! Faust\, the Whole Story won the award for Best Adaptation at the United Solo Theater Festival off Broadway in NYC in 2011! We are delighted to present it to you as a special performance in our holiday season. Please bring friends and family to share this unique event! \nGlen Williamson is a noted actor who has created the Anthropos Theater to share his innovative work as an anthroposophically inspired actor. He has performed leading roles in all the Mystery Dramas and The Green Snake and Beautiful Lily among his many credits. \nRave Reviews\n“Added to the grace\, control and careful choreography of  Mr. Williamson’s movements were an entrancing voice\, a seemingly effortless manner of delivery\, and a gift for storytelling that kept one not on the edge of one’s seat but\, as one audience member expressed it\, ‘feeling as though I was no longer firmly seated in my chair.’”\n— Penny Sutherland       Ottawa\, Ontario \nClick here to read entire review \n“‘The Story of Faust was a very great experience and should be repeated’. When I asked the young coworkers personally\, their eyes were shining when they told me how much they liked it. You were a great success!! You have touched us all. When are you coming back?”\n— Inge Sell

SUMMARY:Christianity in the age of Materialism
DESCRIPTION:We often think of materialism as “consumerism”\, producing and wanting ever more and more stuff. Yes\, that is one of the results of materialistic thinking\, but it goes much deeper than that. Materialism\, belief that this world is all there is\, and that things are as we perceive them\, is much more insidious. It is in each one of us\, in the air we breathe and the water we drink\, in our educational systems and even in our churches. How do we find our way through materialism to the spirit? Can we get there from here?\nJohn the Baptist has said\, “Change your heart and mind.” One small change within us can bring about amazing results! It is as if the Universe has been waiting so long that one step in the right direction is met with tremendous encouragement. We can change our vision and learn to see the world differently and transform materialism. Join us on this exciting journey of discovery.

SUMMARY:From the Beginning to the End of Time
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Rev Carol Kelly: Stories have been an integral and intimate part of human culture since the very beginning of time. The creation stories in every culture weave into our consciousness and form a foundation for our existence. The folk-tales\, fairy-tales\, wise tales and parables give us food for thought in a timeless way. A story can be told over and over and never lose its value. True life stories\, biographies\, stories of triumph and failure help us to understand ourselves\, broaden our human experience\, unite us in a universally human way. \nWe can find truth\, healing power and great wisdom in the stories from all generations\, even into the future. The invisible is woven into the fabric of every good story. True stories leave us free\, while serving to nurture\, protect and strengthen the very best in the human spirit. We can’t get enough of them! \nThis will be an evening of stories\, in which we will also try to discern between stories which are “true” in the highest sense\, and those which are false or distorted pictures of humanity. We can all be fed by a good story!

SUMMARY:Harvesting Seeds of Soul to Carry into the Future
DESCRIPTION:This is a Biography and Social Arts workshop presented by Certified Biography worker Sarah Putnam PhD. In honor of this Michaelmas season in which we harvest what we have sown\, we will reflect on the life lessons that have matured in this past year and the labor that has brought them forth.  Which soul endeavors in your life have born fruit\, nurtured you and others and what are the seeds that will bear fruit into the future? Reflecting on the events that have shaped this past season\, we will strive through artistic process and conversation to discover the working of the spiritual world in our lives. What seeds of soul will You be able to bequeath to the future\, whether in this life or the next? \nSarah Putnam PhD. is a gifted and experienced workshop leader who is adept in using a subtle touch to guide her students and client’s to new insight and purpose. Her easy laughter and sensitivity to others make her workshops a safe place for personal discovery. They are also surprisingly powerful in building a sense of connectedness and community among the people who attend. Even if you have no experience in biography work and are an absolute klutz in anything artistic\, do not despair. This workshop is for you and for all of us who want a deeper understanding of life’s meaning.

SUMMARY:Michaelmas Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Since ancient times\, Sept 29th was not dedicated to the Archangel Michael alone\, but to all the legions of mighty hierarchical beings who bring inspiration\, new life and courage to man. As Autumn begins\, the Sun forces recede and we must turn inward to find the strength to face the coming darkness. Archangel Michael is the Archangel of the Sun and Prince of all the 9 hierarchies. He stands before man as a threshold being who recalls to us the nearness of the heavenly worlds. Through him\, we may meet the Christ. For this reason\, he is regarded as the ‘Countenance of Christ’. He is also victor over the forces of the dragon who has been cast down upon earth in battles long ago where he now torments\, deceives and weakens man’s soul forces. Michael supports our striving to overcome adversity\, to rise out of our lower self and become citizens of the spiritual world once again. \nOur celebration this year will be a collaborative artistic event in which you are invited to share readings of poetry\, short prose or mantram that speak to the themes of spiritual courage\, self sacrifice\, inner awakening or the battle between light and darkness. If you have images of St George or Michael\, please bring them along. A group of lyrists will perform evocative pieces between the recitals including internationally acclaimed lyrist John Billing.  Samantha Embrey who lent us her iron gongs last year will be returning to shower us with deep\, resonant tones to awaken our senses.  And finally\, if you would like to bring some small snack to add to our refreshment table\, that will be much appreciated. \nWe hope that by having many people participate in bringing words that are significant to them\, we will have a diverse\, stimulating and creative experience as we awaken together in community.

SUMMARY:Readings for the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Reading for the Dead is one of the ways that we as a community can honor our beloved one’s who have crossed the threshold\, but also to deepen our understanding of the nature of the spiritual worlds. In so doing\, we aid the passage of those beyond the threshold who seek those on earth who can connect with them\, and with life between death and rebirth. We strive to build a relationship with each other in a mutual relationship of spiritual seeking and understanding. We delve into the mysteries of life and life after death in an effort to bring alive what lives in us about the workings of the spiritual world.\n\n\nIn doing so\, we attune ourselves to what surrounds us in all we do\, feel and think. Life is an experience of living and becoming aware of what/who lives in the surrounding spaces of existence\, from the forces of nature in all its aspects to our relationships with each other as human beings and our Dead. \nWe engage with wonder and we listen deeply to our surroundings and to each other. We also struggle together to understand what it means to be a human being living a journey from heaven to earth and back again as we do in our individual karmic pictures. We acknowledge that we are spiritual beings attempting to make a true relationship to ourselves\, each other and to the forces at work in the world and beyond. \nMany come to our study on a regular basis. Some come for a shorter time when they have experienced the death of a friend or relative to seek comfort and deeper understanding of the journey from life to death and back to life. All are welcome to come. We engage in a verse and lyre playing at the beginning and at the end of our gathering. We enjoy many moods and experiences depending on who comes. It is a remarkably healing and uplifting experience to study and share together in this capacity. \nFor information about what lecture we are reading on a given Thursday\, please contact Joanna Carey. We will meet every other Thursday throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Thresholds in Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:To contemplate the destinies of human beings with reverence and awe\, \nthat is something that our times demand of us.” Rudolf Steiner \nWhat doorways have opened for you? Where did they lead? How were you changed? \nThresholds are part of the vocabulary of Anthroposophy\, yet we pass through many during our pilgrimage on earth without noticing them\, celebrating them\, or honoring that which came and that which was left behind. What doorways have opened for you? Where did they lead? How were you changed? Who opened doors for you and helped you along the way? Have you found one door firmly closed\, only to discover you held the key to another? What threshold do you stand before today? \nIn this workshop\, we will explore the stories of our lives from the perspective of doorways. Using natural materials\, pastels\, writing and conversation\, we will seek to reveal the processes of destiny. We will work with biography as a way to seek the “I” not only in the impulses that come from within outwards\, but also in what has come into our lives from without. \nSarah Putnam\, Ph.D.\, received her doctorate in cultural psychology from the University of NC and is a Certified Biography Worker. She has extensive experience delivering in-depth coaching\, group facilitation and training for healthcare\, industry\, school systems and governmental agencies. A long-time student of anthroposophy\, Sarah greatly appreciates the richness and beauty of the inner life with her clients. \nRegistration required\, please contact:\nSarah Putnam – 336-972-8243 or Diana Haynes – 919-768-3969

SUMMARY:Reading for the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Reading for the Dead is one of the ways that we as a community can honor our beloved one’s who have crossed the threshold\, but also to deepen our understanding of the nature of the spiritual worlds. In so doing\, we aid the passage of those beyond the threshold who seek those on earth who can connect with them and with life between death and rebirth. We strive to build a relationship with each other in a mutual relationship of spiritual seeking and understanding. We delve into the mysteries of life and life after death in an effort to bring alive what lives in us about the workings of the spiritual world. \nIn doing so\, we attune ourselves to what surrounds us in all we do\, feel and think.\nLife is an experience of living and becoming aware of what/who lives in the surrounding spaces of existence\, from the forces of nature in all its aspects to our relationships with each other as human beings and our Dead. We meet in a private home. We engage in a verse and lyre playing at the beginning and at the end of our gathering. We enjoy many moods and experiences depending on who comes.\nIt is a remarkably healing and uplifting experience to study and share together in this capacity.\nThank you.\nJoanna Carey
