SUMMARY:Confirmation
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 19th the Christian Community of Chapel Hill-Durham will be holding a very special event: The Sacrament of Confirmation of 8 young people. The confirmands and their families will be coming from Hillsborough\, NC; Austin\, Texas; Gainesville\, Florida; Atlanta\,Georgia; and Washington\, DC. Please join us for this very special occasion. \nConfirmation takes place at the age of 14\, as a rite of passage bringing Christ’s light and strength to human beings as they are blessed and burdened by puberty’s gifts and begin to seek their own path into life. The young people approaching Confirmation are being welcomed into the world of adulthood. They are told that they are on the threshold from one period of life to the next. They are introduced to Christ as the One who will lead them through the joys and sorrows of life. They receive the Holy Spirit in a blessing and the laying on of hands. Then they are “released” into the community but also into life. \nThe first deed that they do in their new life is to attend the Consecration of the Human Being\, the adult service\, and receive Holy Communion. This is to invite them into a new phase of life\, in which they have more freedom but one which will allow them to experience themselves as evolving spiritual beings in an earthly life. The journey from young adulthood to full adulthood is a long and crucial one. We acknowledge this and work to strengthen and encourage them along the way. \nThree Christian Community priests will be present on this important occasion: Rev. Oliver Steinrueck\, who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation; Rev. Carol Kelly\, who has led the confirmands in Washington\, Chapel Hill\, and Gainesville; and Rev. Emma Heirman who has prepared the confirmands in Atlanta and Austin. \nEveryone is welcome to attend. \nThe Sacrament of Confirmation will begin at 10:30 am. Children are allowed to attend the first part of the ceremony which will last about 20 minutes. Then there will be a brief pause\, during which the priest will change vestments in preparation for the Consecration. At this time the children under 12 will be ushered out (child care will be provided) while the rest of the congregation remains seated for the second part of the service. \nThe service will begin 10:30 AM – (please note that there will be no story time or Children’s Service) \nFollowing the Confirmation\, at approximately 12:00\, there will be a Festive Meal for all attendees\, and then a Reception between 1:00 and 2:00PM. All are warmly invited to attend. \nFor more information contact Buddy Smiley by email at lsmiley7542@gmail.com or call him at 919-951-4353.

SUMMARY:Devotional Gathering
DESCRIPTION:We begin at 10:30 am and social time begins around noon. If you’ve never attended a devotional service it involves a little singing\, short prayers\, reading of scripture (this time it will be John 10: 1-21) followed by discussion. We typically read from the Jon Madsen translation of The New Testament\, but compare with other versions. Our conversation about the gospel reading tends to deepen and illuminate our understanding while drawing us into a spiritually intimate communion. It’s always a rich experience.

SUMMARY:Lay Service
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join in a Christian Community Lay Service on the first Sunday of each month in the home of Buddy and Sarah Smiley at 228 Forest Hill Rd. Chapel Hill\, NC 27514. For those of you who have never attended a Lay service\, we sing\, recite the Creed and the Lords Prayer and join in a meaningful conversation about the gospel selection for that week. We also break bread\, albeit gluten free crackers in most cases\, and spend time enjoying each other’s company in the snack and coffee time after the service. We can continue to build our Christian community by reading the same Gospel readings each Sunday – whether we meet together or not. We read from the Jon Madsen translation of the Bible. This is an important deed for the spiritual world and it feeds our angel who watches over us\, especially when we all strive to work together spiritually for the good. \nThis year\, we will email the Gospel reading beforehand to our listserv so that those of you unable to attend our service can join us in spirit by reading and contemplating on your own. Everyone is welcome and feel free to bring guests or family members who are open to the Christian message. Healthy contributions to the snack are appreciated but not required. For clarification on any of this information\, please email: Buddy Smiley at: lsmiley7542@gmail.com or call at: 919-951-4353.\n\nWe look forward to you joining us in our gatherings!

How could we think differently about them? What about the “boundary” between the material world and the spiritual world? Between heaven and earth? Let’s allow ourselves to rethink.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Mystery Drama of Human Biography
DESCRIPTION:Mystery Drama of Human Biography – Seeking to See the Spirit in the Story \nA lecture by Rev Richard Dancey.  Is human life a story? Who is writing? Are we authors\, co-authors or pawns? Creatures or creators? Is it “a tale told by an idiot\, full of sound and fury\, signifying nothing?” Is it full of meaning? And what about reincarnation? These are some of the questions and mysteries we will try to enter into in this talk.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Daily Practice
DESCRIPTION:“The Importance of Daily Practice”\n– “The one thing that shall not be taken away from you.” (Luke 11) \nA talk by Carol Kelly \nMary sits at the Lord’s feet and listens to His words. Our listening heart\, our attentiveness is what is being called for now.\nWe live in a world filled with anxiety\, fear and greed. This is the atmosphere we breathe. But it need not become our reality. We have something much stronger and long-lasting than any material\, or any drug or distraction. It builds upon itself like a well-maintained garden\, musicality or any acquired skill. It creates the space for the Divine will in us. We are the vessels through which the Holy Spirit can work. We are realizing the spiritual world in this world\, day by day.

SUMMARY:Rev Kelly talk on Water: permeated with spirit
DESCRIPTION:Water: precious\, selfless and permeated with Spirit. \nThe world is made of Spirit. The REAL world IS just that. The one we live in\, the material world\, we can think of as a “special case of spirit.” Spirit moves with what moves\, forms what will be formed\, and makes itself manifest where there is “activity.” This applies also to our thinking.\nWhere and how does water appear in the Gospels? How can we receive its message?

SUMMARY:Easter Sunrise Observation & Lay Service
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 27\, 6:30 am.  Easter Sunrise Observance and Breakfast at the Frey’s.  The sun will rise at 7:09vam.  We need to be seated and waiting at 6:30 am as the sun begins to send its rays at least 30 minutes before it crests the horizon.  Dr. Rudolf Steiner gave us a beautiful Easter imagination for greeting the sun on Easter morning.  We should envision Lucifer coming to us in the early rays of the sun.  When the sun crests we can imagine the Christ coming to us behind Lucifer with outstretched arms.  When we hear the voices of songbirds being raised to the sun we should imagine that they reach the realm of the Cherubim\, for indeed they do.  We should allow our souls to rise with the songbird’s voice\, and imagine the Cherubim turning to acknowledge both the songbird and our listening souls.\nWe will have chairs and lap blankets.  You’re advised to dress warmly.  Please turn to the right after you park your car and follow the lights to our waiting spot. \nAfter the sunrise\, we will share a gospel reading\, song\, and shared contemplation before adjourning to a lovely breakfast provided by the Frey family. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:The Harrowing of Hell - talk by Edward Schuldt
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 26\, 7:00pm.  The Harrowing of Hell:\nChrist’s Descent into the Interior of the Earth and How We Can Go With Him   A talk by Edward Schuldt \nThe nine spheres of the interior of the Earth have been a topic of research for Edward Schuldt for many years now. They also play an important role in a novel Edward is writing. Edward compares the 9 spheres of the earth with the stages of Christian initiation as well as the Nine Beatitudes. This promises to be a fascinating exploration of a very esoteric mystery. \nA light supper of soup and salad will follow.   A limited number of participants may spend the night at Judy’s home in order to get up early for the Easter Sunrise (7:07 am). Please call Judy to see if there are any beds left:  919-928-8749 or simply arrive around 7 am or earlier..

SUMMARY:Good Friday - Stages of Christian Initiation
DESCRIPTION:Good Friday\, March 25\, 1:30 pm.  The Stages of Christian Initiation \nIn the past\, those who sought higher consciousness entered into Mystery Schools for training with a Priest-Hierophant who directed their every step. Today initiation occurs in everyday living without the help of an initiatory priest.  At the time of Christ\, it was impossible for one to have a full experience of Golgotha because mankind was still developing the Intellectual Soul. One had to wait until the development of the Consciousness Soul  to become mature enough to experience inwardly the Imaginations which begin to reveal the true reality of the Mystery of Golgotha. Christ Himself has become the Teacher for the Path of Christian Initiation. Meditating on the St. John Gospel will eventually lead to a Clairvoyant experience of the Mystery of Golgotha\, according to Rudolf Steiner. \nOn Good Friday we will explore the Path of these Stations of the Cross that are the basis for the stages of Christian Initiation. Referring to the lectures of Rudolf Steiner and the reflections of Kristina Kaine\, who has written a book “Reflections on the Seven Christian Initiations in the Gospel of St. John”\, we will explore how we can partake in this Mystery process with Christ.\nFollowing  a talk on this topic by Kathleen Wright\, participants will discuss their own understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha. They will then have the opportunity to meditate on the Stations of the Cross or walk the labyrinth on the beautiful grounds at Avila Retreat Center. Instructions for using the labyrinth will be handed out at Avila.\nMembers will gather in the parking lot at Avila at 1:30 PM sharp (please don’t be late) and we will walk to one of the outdoor gazebos for our talk. The grounds at Avila Retreat Center are open to the public; however a “good will donation” was suggested by them\, as our members may need to use the facilities indoors.  We will take up a collection. Avila was chosen because of its extraordinary spiritual energy. If you have never been there\, check out the website which has a video of the grounds.
