DESCRIPTION:Whitsun\, or Pentecost\, celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit which first occurred 50 days after the Resurrection. Rev. Carol Kelly will be able to join us on this Tuesday\, June 2nd at 10:30 am to celebrate the Festival of Whitsun. This is our last visit with her for the foreseeable future as she is moving to a new community in Hillsdale\, NY next month. This will be a chance for us to share the blessings of the sacrament and say good bye to our beloved priest. We will be holding the service outside so that all can attend the service in a Covid-safe way. If you wish to bring a personal greeting card or gift for Carol\, we will be sharing such offerings with her on this occasion. \nThe location of the service has been moved to the backyard of Robin and Diana Haynes. The address is: 2707 Tryon Rd\, Durham\, NC 27705. We are asking everyone to observe social distancing protocol throughout your time on the premises. Please enter through the garden gate to the right of the garage. The house will be off limits except to use the restroom. The yard is large and we will set up individual chairs 6’ apart. If you choose to be in close proximity with anyone\, please wear a facial mask. Masks will not be required while practicing social distancing\, but to keep everyone safe\, please bring one along in the event that you choose to be closer than 6’ from someone. \nPractical Considerations:\nChildcare will not be provided. There will be liquid refreshments available\, as well as a hand sanitizer station. If you have a lawn chair that you can easily bring\, you might find that more comfortable than our folding chairs. Those with hearing challenges are encouraged to sit in the front row of seats as the acoustics of being outside can make it harder to hear. Please pull forward to park snugly in the driveway and you’re also welcome to park on the street\, being mindful not to obstruct mailboxes or driveways. \nIf you are unable to join us for the Act of Consecration but would like to make a donation to help Carol in her transition to a new home in the Taconic Berkshire community\, you can donate online. Please add in the note section how much you would like to give Rev. Carol personally and how much you would like to donate to help cover our normal costs for a priest visit. We hope you will come and share in this Festival of Hope.

The confirmands and their families will be coming from Hillsborough\, NC; Austin\, Texas; Gainesville\, Florida; Atlanta\,Georgia; and Washington\, DC. Please join us for this very special occasion. \nConfirmation takes place at the age of 14\, as a rite of passage bringing Christ’s light and strength to human beings as they are blessed and burdened by puberty’s gifts and begin to seek their own path into life. The young people approaching Confirmation are being welcomed into the world of adulthood. They are told that they are on the threshold from one period of life to the next. They are introduced to Christ as the One who will lead them through the joys and sorrows of life. They receive the Holy Spirit in a blessing and the laying on of hands. Then they are “released” into the community but also into life. \nThe first deed that they do in their new life is to attend the Consecration of the Human Being\, the adult service\, and receive Holy Communion. This is to invite them into a new phase of life\, in which they have more freedom but one which will allow them to experience themselves as evolving spiritual beings in an earthly life. The journey from young adulthood to full adulthood is a long and crucial one. We acknowledge this and work to strengthen and encourage them along the way. \nThree Christian Community priests will be present on this important occasion: Rev. Oliver Steinrueck\, who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation; Rev. Carol Kelly\, who has led the confirmands in Washington\, Chapel Hill\, and Gainesville; and Rev. Emma Heirman who has prepared the confirmands in Atlanta and Austin. \nEveryone is welcome to attend. \nThe Sacrament of Confirmation will begin at 10:30 am. Children are allowed to attend the first part of the ceremony which will last about 20 minutes. Then there will be a brief pause\, during which the priest will change vestments in preparation for the Consecration. At this time the children under 12 will be ushered out (child care will be provided) while the rest of the congregation remains seated for the second part of the service. \nThe service will begin 10:30 AM – (please note that there will be no story time or Children’s Service) \nFollowing the Confirmation\, at approximately 12:00\, there will be a Festive Meal for all attendees\, and then a Reception between 1:00 and 2:00PM.
